Course Description

The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course on Long Island is designed for individuals who want to become certified swim instructors. The course covers essential skills for teaching swimming and water safety, including effective communication, learning theories, lesson planning, and instructional methods. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Water Safety Instructor certification, valid for 2 years.

Teaching swimming and water safety is a rewarding and fulfilling career, perfect for high school and college students, as well as professionals looking for a part-time job or career change.

Lifeguard LI classes provide a supportive environment and modern training techniques, including videos, group discussion, and hands-on practice. You'll be educated in various swimming techniques, water safety, and drowning prevention methods.

Lifeguard LI trainers are experienced, certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors with years of teaching experience. We are fully insured and provide a unique approach to the course content, creating a comfortable and engaging learning experience. We know you won't be disappointed.

Course Pre-requisites:

Participants must be at least 16 years old by the last day of the class. The following pre-requisite skills will be evaluated on the first day of the course:

  1. Swim the following strokes, demonstrating proficiency and using proper techniques:

    • 25 yards of front crawl

    • 25 yards of back crawl

    • 25 yards of breaststroke

    • 25 yards of elementary backstroke

    • 25 yards of sidestroke

    • 15 yards of butterfly

  2. Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).

  3. Tread water for 1 minute.

Required Course Materials:

Participants must bring the following items to the class:

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Manual

  • American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Manual

  • Swimsuit and towel

  • Goggles (optional)

Upon successful completion of the Water Safety Instructor Course, we recommend taking the following courses to further enhance your skills and career opportunities:

  • Lifeguarding

  • Basic Life Support

  • Administering Emergency Oxygen

  • Certified Pool Operator

  • Responding to Emergencies

  • Pool Management
